Leukopenia is common in Zika virus infection

Dear Sir,

At present, Zika virus infection is an important widely discussed arboviral disease. It can cause a dengue-like infection.[1],[2] There is still limited data on its clinical findings. Here, the authors summarize the previous data on white blood counts among reported cases of Zika virus infections. From available data on four cases with Zika virus infections,[3],[4],[5],[6] leukopenia can be seen in two cases giving a rate equal to 50%. The range of white blood count is 3800–6180 cells/µL with mean equal to 5060 ± 990 cells/µL. Based on this finding, it can be seen that leukopenia is common in Zika virus infection and this might be an important clue for general practitioners in dealing with cases of acute hemorrhagic fever.
